ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Missouri Governor Jay Nixon says he doesn't what the state Capitol to have metal detectors to screen visitors.

Authorities this week are investigating the discovery of small stickers resembling gun targets near the office doors of several lawmakers.

KMOX Radio reports that Nixon said Thursday he wants people to feel welcome when they visit the Capitol, not "like they're going into some sort of zone."

But Democratic House member Ed Schieffer, of Troy, says he doesn't want to wait until after an incident before asking why there are no metal detectors.

The machines were installed in the building after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, but were taken out during a budget crunch in 2003. Capitol Police and local law officers in the past have urged restoring the metal detectors.
