Update January 26th at 11:45 a.m.:
Osage Beach Police have released the report from Wednesday’s crash that damaged a local school; and police said a distracted driver could be to blame.
Officers said it was a 16-year-old student, driving a 2006 Pontiac G6, who lost control of the vehicle at the lighted intersection of the school.
Police said the car hit the far curb and became airborne. When it landed, the car accelerated and continued nearly 60 yards uphill. That’s when the car hit the southwest corner of the Upper Elementary building. The vehicle rolled multiple times back down the hill before coming to a rest.
Officers said they were surprised the driver had no apparent injuries. He was wearing his seatbelt.
Police said right before he lost control of the car, the driver was trying to download music onto a lap-top computer.
Officers said the damaged classroom’s teacher was sitting about three feet from the impact point. A bookcase in front of a window blocked debris from hitting the students and teacher.
School officials said the classroom will be out of service the rest of the school year.
