COLUMBIA, MO. -- 2 Mizzou veterans received the United States Department of Defense’s second-highest honor for a civilian.

MU Veterans Center Director Carol Fleisher and former Mizzou Student Veterans Association President Daniel Sewell were honored for their efforts to establish the MU Veterans Center.

The center is one of the first of three facilities of its kind in the United States.

Workers, at the center, help veterans on the Mizzou campus and surrounding communities adjust to academic life.

Fleisher said, “If they are deciding to get out, and if they decide to come to Mizzou, we want to make sure that we can offer them success and take away the worry.”

Sewell said, “I think it is really a testament of what Mizzou has done for veterans and what the community has done in welcoming veterans home.  It really is an honor, obviously.”

The MU Veterans Center was established in 2008 to help raise awareness of the needs of student veterans at Mizzou and other Missouri colleges and universities.
