House fire displaces mid-MO family

Fire crews were called to a home on Clark Avenue in Jefferson City Thursday night.

Several reports of a house fire were called in around 3:20 p.m.

When crews arrived, they found flames coming through the front door of the residence.

It took about forty minutes to get the fire under control.

A fire department spokesperson says there was serious damage to the first floor of the house and moderate damage to the second floor. They estimate that the home is a complete loss.

There was only one person was in the house at the time of the fire.

Eric Johnson described what happened:

"I came in the house around 3:00, sat at the computer. Five minutes later I heard a boom from the kitchen. When I looked, the whole... up to the ceiling was on fire. So I ran out the door and called 911."

Johnson, his wife, and seven children reside in this house. The Red Cross is putting them in a hotel and providing food.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
