Female deer with antlers

Deer season is over for this year but hunters have been reporting some interesting finds.

There are female deer with antlers somewhere in Missouri. Typically, only male deer, or bucks, have antlers.

There have been five reports from hunters who shot antlered deer that appear to be, at least externally, female.

Experts say the female deer with antlers probably have higher than normal testosterone levels, or they're hermaphrodites with both male and female parts.

Missouri Department of Conservation Deer Biologist, Emily Flinn said, "This is not something we investigate thoroughly so we really don't know the amount that are in the wild although considering we've had about 220 thousand deer harvested this year, having five antlered anomalies isn't out of the question".

About 190,000 deer were harvested during the November gun season.
