MALDEN, Mo. (AP) -- Emotions in Malden are running high over the southeast Missouri town's use of a gas chamber to euthanize unwanted strays.

The Kennett Daily Dunklin Democrat reports that animal advocates are asking city officials to find a better way of handling strays.

At a recent city council meeting, resident Sue Bostic said the gas chamber is cruel because the process can be slow and cause animals to suffer. Bostic told the council that gas chambers for animals have been outlawed in at least 19 states.

Council members urged opponents of gassing to come up with a better solution -- but one that is cost-effective -- and submit it in writing.
