The National highway Traffic Safety Administration reports 20 percent of injury crashes in 2009 involved reports of distracted driving.

Out of those, 995 involved reports of a cell phone as a distraction. Two Jefferson City High Schoolers shared their thoughts on cell phones while driving.

“When people hear of like drinking and driving, I mean pretty much everyone is going to be like, 'Oh my gosh,' ya know?” Haley Reed said. “I'd never drink and drive, but if you think about texting and driving, people just think it's innocent. But it's really not. It's just as dangerous.”

“We need to worry more about what is actually more important in front of us, than something we can check later on,” Jefferson City High School student Samantha Krachey said. “What if there is a turn right there you don't know about? What if somebody's walking in front of you and you don't see them because you're too worried about that text message?”

Make sure to take KRCG and the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety's pledge to Focus on the Road. Everyone who makes the pledge is eligible to win a 2012 Ford Focus.
