COLUMBIA, MO. -- More than 60 Southern Boone High School students took their classroom to the streets of Columbia on Tuesday.
Bill Ferguson took the students on the same alleged path his son Ryan took on the night of the 2001 murder of Kent Heitholt.
Ryan Ferguson is serving 40 years in prison for the murder of the former Columbia Tribune sports writer.
Members of the Ashland forensics class are using science to analyze evidence in the Ferguson case.
Teachers have been very careful to present all sides of this story.
Science Teacher Bill Palmer said, “We’ve had police come. We’ve had Mr. Ferguson come. We’ve had several presentations on it. Students have done research. They’re independent. They’re smart kids. They’re smart thinkers. They’ve come up with their own ideas. We don’t spoon feed them.”
A judge granted Ryan Ferguson a habeas hearing that’s been delayed until April 16.
That hearing will allow defense attorneys to present the evidence they believe shows their client was wrongfully convicted.
Ryan Ferguson’s case has been featured numerous times on the CBS News program 48 Hours.
