A recycling center in Jefferson City filled with smoke Thursday night after a industrial shredder caught fire.

Just after 10:30 p.m., fire crews responded to reports of smoke coming from the Federal Recycling Center on West Main Street near Highway 179.

Crews were able to locate the cause of the fire quickly. An industrial shredding machine had a mechanical failure and some combustible materials caught fire. They put the fire out quickly but the machine was a total loss.

It took about 45 minutes to get all of the smoke ventilated from the building. The smoke also made its way into a business that shares the building.

Crews remained on scene until 12:45 a.m. There were no injuries during the incident and the only damage was to the industrial shredder.
