Boone County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a 21-year-old man Tuesday night after the man attempted to run away during a traffic stop.

Around 9:20, a deputy pulled over a vehicle on Brown School Road near Highway 63. As the vehicle slowed to a stop, the person riding in the passenger side attempted to flee the scene. As he ran he dropped a loaded pistol.

A responding deputy caught the passenger a short time later. The suspect was identified as Quinton James Vaughan, 21, of Columbia. The deputy also found Vaughan to be in possession of a controlled substance.

Vaughan was previously convicted of distributing a controlled substance. That makes it illegal to possess a firearm.

Vaughan was taken to the Boone County Jail. His bond has been placed at $9,500. He is accused of unlawful possession of a firearm, resisting arrest, and possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana.

The driver of the vehicle was released.
