Tony LaRussa announces Monday that he will retire as manager of the Cardinals.

Cardinals Manager Tony LaRussa announced his retirement during a news conference Monday morning at Busch Stadium.

LaRussa has managed the Cardinals since 1996. He started with the Chicago White Sox in 1970, before moving to manage the Oakland A's in 1986.

LaRussa's retirement announcement comes just days after his team's historic come-back to win the 2011 World Series. He also managed the Cardinals in 2006 when the team brought home their 10th World Series title. He also won a championship in Oakland in 1989.

In Monday's press conference, the 67-year-old manager thanked his wife Elaine for her support over the years.

La Russa retires third on the all-time wins list, just 35 behind John McGraw.
