Highway 179 in Jefferson City reopened on Monday, two weeks ahead of schedule.

The road was closed at the end of August to build the underpass where the new Mission Boulevard will interchange with 179, providing access to the new St. Mary's Health Center construction area.

MoDot officials said good weather lead to the early finish on the bridge.

"Our current completion date is Aug. 1, 2012. And this is obviously a good sign," MoDot engineer Patty Lemongelli said. "But I don't think, at this point, it's a guarantee that the project is gonna be completed two weeks early. But we have a very good contractor, very efficient, very dependable. So, again, it's a good sign, but there's no guarantee at this time."

The next step is to remove a substantial amount of rock from the west sie of the new underpass to make room for the ramps that will provide access to the new road underneath 179.
