COLUMBIA, MO. (AP) -- A University of Missouri professor claims in a lawsuit that she suffered permanent nerve damage when Pittsburgh police used a device that emits pain-inducing sounds to break up a protest at a G-20 Summit meeting.
The Columbia Daily Tribune (http://bit.ly/o3gtJk ) reported Sunday that Karen Piper went to the September 2009 protest because of the book she was working on while serving as a visiting professor at Carnegie Mellon University.
She says officers pointed her toward a Long Range Acoustic Device when she asked for the safest way to leave. She says the device then began emitting loud noises with no warning.
Piper is seeking compensatory damages for her medical expenses and for lost income in the suit filed last month in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
