Update Saturday, October 1st at 6:30 p.m.:

One person was taken to the hospital after a helicopter crashed at Jefferson City Memorial Airport.

The Navy Seahawk was taking off around 1:45 this afternoon. It reached a height off less than 20 feet before it came down on one of the runways.

Three people were aboard. The person who was injured apparently was riding in the rear of the helicopter where most of the damage occurred. Crews on the scene said those injuries were minor to moderate. The airport was closed for a little more than 2 hours. It reopened just before 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

The helicopter had been in service for about 20 hours. Crews say it was on its way from New Jersey to San Diego and had stopped to refuel in Jefferson City.

Witnesses said the rear rotor appeared to have malfunctioned.
