BOONE COUNTY, MO. -- What started out as death investigation turned out to be a false alarm.
Two men walking their dog on the River Road near Easley in Southern Boone County found several bones including a lower jaw on the bank of the Missouri River.
Boone County medical examiners and Mizzou anthropologists checked out the bones and discovered they were human.
However, some hardware attached to the bones showed they were nothing but the remains of a skeletal display used in a science classroom.
Boone County Sheriff’s Department Officials said the men did the right thing by calling 911.
They said you should always call authorities when you find anything suspicious.
Boone County Sheriff’s Detective Tom O’Sullivan said, “Our officers, in addition to the lower jaw bone, also recovered some other bones that were in the immediate area. Obviously at that time, we treated the incident as being suspicious.”
Authorities don’t suspect any foul play in connection with the bones.
They have no way to determine how the bones ended up on the river bank near Easley.
