Missouri ranks number 10 in states where female homicides were committed by men.
A new study from the Violence Policy Center reports a female homicide by male rate of 1.7 per 100,000. The average rate of women killed by men nationally was 1.25 per 100,000.
Missouri ranks in the top ten with Nevada, Alabama, Louisiana, Arizona, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, South Dakota and Hawaii.
"Violence against women too often escalates to homicide," VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand said in a statement. "Prevention of such violence deserves serious and sustained attention from law enforcement officials and policymakers alike."
Nationwide, 1,818 females were murdered by males in a single victim/single offender situation in 2009. The study used data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's unpublished Supplementary Homicide Report. The report is released each year to coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
Weapon use was also included in the report. When a weapon could be determined, firearms were the most common weapon used by males to murder females. When the victim to offender relationship could be identified, 93 percent of the female victims nationwide were murdered by someone they knew.
