People across Mid-Missouri will commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9-11. Many activities are being organized by faith communities.

Here are some of them. Please leave us a comment below with information about other 9-11 observances.

Safe Sunday:

Some churches will be a part of "Safe Sunday." It's part of a Homeland Security initiative. Faith-based organizations in the thirteen-county region are encouraged to provide free disaster planning materials to their members on, or during the week of, Sunday, September 11, 2011.

The planning materials are offered at no charge through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services to any organization or individual through their web site at www.health.mo.gov/emergencies/readyin3/mainreadyform.php.

Peace Coalitions, Columbia:

Rock Bridge Christian Church in Columbia, the Islamic Center of Central Missouri and Columbia Peace Coalition are just three of the groups involved in a Sunday remembrance aimed at ending war and mourning the lives lost in the attacks and subsequent war on terror.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, leaders of various faith communities will share reflections at approximately 1:30 pm in the Islamic Center of Central Missouri, 201 S. 5th St. in Columbia, then participate in a reflective procession to the Boone County Courthouse for a brief commemorative program.

Christian Chapel Church, Columbia:

A patriotic Sunday service is planned by a large south Columbia church. Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m the service includes featured guest speaker Chaplain (Colonel) Scott McChrystal (brother of Brigadier General Stanley McChrystal.)

Mizzou ROTC Color Guard emergency vehicles will be on display, and the day includes musical and artistic tributes to those whose lives were impacted or lost during the attacks of 9/11.

Service:

Saturday members of Christian Chapel will be reaching out and serving several local charities. Volunteers will meet at the church parking lot at 3300 S. Providence Road at 9 AM and then spread out all over the community, serving organizations such as: Love Inc., Coyote Hill, Rainbow House, Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, Boys and Girls Club, True North Women's Shelter, Central Missouri Humane Society, Upward Soccer and Saturday Cafe.

The service mission continues Sunday with United Methodist Churches across the state. In an effort called Serve 2011 the six United Methodist Churches in Columbia, along with anyone who wants to help, will spend Sunday helping people make necessary repairs on their homes through the Boone County Council on Aging and City of Columbia Neighborhood Services.

Volunteers meet at Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church at 8 a.m., where there will be a short service of remembrance for those lost on Sept. 11, 2001 at Missouri United Methodist Church at 10 a.m.

Jefferson City Parade:

At  2:00pm Sunday the Cole county Chiefs Association sponsors a Patriot's Day Parade. It starts at the corner of Broadway and West High and continues down High and turns left on Adams, makes another left on Capitol then heads west to the intersection of Missouri Boulevard.

Come help the emergency services of Cole County commemorate their brothers and sisters and all those lives lost on September 11, 2001.

More than 75 units are expected and flags will be handed out along the route.
