COLE COUNTY, MO -- Updated: Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 at 5:30 pm:

Late this afternoon, the Cole County Sheriff's Office confirmed that 28-year old Caleb Crabtree died after being shot in Eugene on Friday night.

The shooting happened off Highway 17 in Eugene.

Neighbors tell KRCG Crabtree had made threats against the shooter and others before.

The Cole county sheriff confirmed with us that his department knew about the tensions between the group.

Many residents in Eugene tell us that Crabtree got shot in self-defense.

But the Cole County Sheriff's Department is still investigating.

The sheriff said deputies interviewed the shooter and witnesses about what exactly happened that night.

But because the case is still under investigation, Sheriff White said nothing can be released at this time.

The man that shot Crabtree isn't in custody and hasn't been charged with murder.

The Cole county sheriff told us the prosecutor is looking over the report to see if charges will be filed.

Update: Friday, Sept. 2 at 9:33pm:

Friends say a fatal shooting tonight in Eugene was self-defense, but the sheriff's investigation continues.

It happened late this afternoon at a rental home at 16803 Highway 17. The Cole County Sheriff's Department was called with a report of a man shot to death. The shooter did not flee.

Police are being tight lipped about the case, only saying that the investigation continues. While at the scene, we saw a man being driven away in a deputy's car with this hands covering his face.

Police say no one has been arrested and Sheriff Greg White would not comment on whether the shooting may be considered self-defense. "When we've completed the investigation, decisions will be made." says White.

Neighbors tell us the victim had threatened the family that lives in the house before he showed up there Friday night.  Sheriff White confirms his department was also aware of the tensions.
