Update:

The Jefferson City volunteers have been activated to travel to the east coast.

Two emergency response vehicles , each with two volunteers are headed to the Richmond,Virginia area.

Original Story:

Volunteers from the local American Red Cross are on standby.

They could be called up to help if Hurricane Irene hits the east coast.

If they are activated they'll send two emergency response vehicles with four volunteers.

CEO Beth Bauer says the Red Cross activates nearby chapters first, and when they've all responded that's when they get the call to bring in their emergency response vehicles,
"They have water and snacks and those types of things, and they can get into areas when people aren't in a shelter and they're still in their homes they can go out and feed them right there".

Hurricane Irene could make landfall later this week--but winds along the coast could pick up as soon as tomorrow.
