A gas theft suspect in Ashland ended up leading law enforcement on a high speed chase through two counties on Saturday.

The chase, which ended in Moniteau County, began after the Fast Lane Gas Station in Ashland reported a vehicle leaving without pay. According to Jefferson City Police, a store employee tried to stop the vehicle from leaving the station, but instead, the driver almost hit the employee.

Around 10 a.m., Jefferson City Police spotted the vehicle matching the description provided by employees.

50-year-old Joseph Renig then led JCPD officers on a high speed chase through west Jefferson City.

When he crossed into Moniteau County on Route C, the Highway Patrol used spike strips to pop Renig's tires. He drove for another mile, before ramming into a JCPD vehicle.

According to police, officers had to break a window to remove Renig from the car. He's now facing multiple charges.
