JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- A southwestern Missouri lawmaker is hoping his colleagues will consider offering some property tax relief to businesses that were destroyed by the Joplin tornado.
In Missouri, the start of the year is the key date for determining the value and ability to tax property. However, some counties have adopted ordinances that allow residential property to be removed from the tax rolls if the home cannot be inhabited. Commercial property does not get that treatment.
That means businesses destroyed in Joplin remain on the tax rolls even if their owners are not earning any revenue from their property.
Republican House member Bill White, of Joplin, says he hopes lawmakers could consider some changes during a special legislative session that is planned for September.
