COLUMBIA, MO -- Budget constraints led Columbia city officials to eliminate their assistant city manager.

Paula Hertwig Hopkins’ position is being eliminated.

"I appreciate the opportunity I had to serve this wonderful community,” Hopkins said in a statement. “I am proud of the projects and goals I was able to help the city accomplish, feel privileged to have worked with such a great staff and thank them for their assistance over the years."

Hopkins worked for the city of Columbia for more than 11 years.

"She has taken the lead on many key projects, and her strong work ethic and dedication to the city will be missed," City Manager Mike Matthes said.

Hopkins recently had some experience being in Matthes’ shoes. She served as acting city manager earlier this year and then was asked to be interim city manager after Bill Watkins retired.

"The city would like to thank and recognize Paula for the exceptional job she did when asked to serve as interim city manager," Matthes said.
"I wish the city, mayor and City Council all the best as they move forward and face new challenges and opportunities," Hopkins said.
