JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- It's the middle of the summer now but just a few months ago a Fulton High School senior fell victim to the dangers of winter.

On February 9 Zackery Oliver was on his way to school when his car slid on ice through a stop sign into the path of a South Callaway school bus.

KRCG's Meghan Lane caught up with Zackery and has more on his road to recovery.

Zackery Oliver’s 1996 Buick was demolished after the wreck.

"The first thing I remember the doctor saying to me was that Zackery would never be the same," Zackery Oliver’s mom Kaye Landers said.

Oliver was in a coma for two weeks after the crash.

But now, Zackery's response when people ask him how he's doing is this:

“I’m good considering I got hit by a bus," Oliver said.

For the past couple of months Zackery has been coming going to the Sam B. Cook Healthplex in Jefferson City for various types of therapy and so far everyone said they're impressed with the progress he's made.

"He's gone from where he had a lot of trouble using that right side to now he's playing the trumpet again he's going and participating in washers tournaments he's doing handwriting, he's doing everything he should be doing with his right hand again,” occupational therapist Justin Lewis said.

"I’m working on new goals like bending over, tying my shoe without having hip pain," Oliver said.

Mom, Kaye Landers said even though she sees physical differences in her son he's still the same Zackery, with hopes and dreams just like any other young man his age.

"The fact that he's just here, it's been a god send and I feel like God has given us a second chance," Landers said.

Instead of leaving for air force this Monday, which was the plan before the crash, Zackery will finish his senior year in the fall and get his diploma.

Lewis believes Zackery has some work to do, but he's very optimistic.

“We’re shooting for 99% because there was some damage but we're still shooting for that 99%," Lewis said.

"I just want everyone to know how very much alive he is," Landers said. "He’s a miracle."

Zackery hopes to one day to go to college and become an interpreter.

On Saturday the family is hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for Zackery.

The event will be from 2-5 pm at the VFW Post 2657 in Fulton and will be $7 per person.

There will also be a raffle and a silent auction.
