According to the Springfield News-Leader, troopers are continuing their investigation into a deadly crash between an ambulance and a dump truck.

The News-Leader is reporting James Pettibone, 67, of Greenfield died in the accident. He was a patient headed to a southwest Missouri hospital in the ambulance.

Royce Hutchison, 74, of Stockton, was also injured in the accident. He was driving a dump truck that swerved into the eastbound lane of Missouri 32. According to preliminary investigations, distance was not a factor in the crash.

In an interview given to the News-Leader, Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Jason Pace said cars in front of Hutchison were pulling off for the ambulance, which had lights and sirens activated. Pace said Hutchison locked the breaks and swerved as he approached the line of cars.

The Polk County Coroner said Pattibone likely died as a result of the crash.

Authorities estimate the full investigation could take up to two months to complete.
