The lead poisoning rate is down by more than half in the past 15 years, but here in Missouri it's a different story.
Lead is a metal that can be harmful to your brain, kidneys, and other organs. According to a new Centers for Disease control report, nationwide lead poisoning is down by more than 50 percent.
Here in Missouri our rates are higher thanks to counties south of St. Louis where mining was once big business. Jefferson, Washington , St. Francois, Iron, and Dent Counties report the highest lead levels in the state.
About 100 cases of lead poisoning have been reported in each one, according to 2004 data from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
Each of the counties in our viewing area report fewer than 10.
People ages 25 to 54 lead the way in poisoning cases.
Some industries to stay away from include battery, and electrical manufacturing, and mining.
Lead mining in Missouri has been around since the 1700's and in recent years the industry has started providing community education services to cut down on poisoning.
