JEFFERSON CITY, MO -- Each year thousands of kids use the free lunch program at Mid-Missouri schools. But, when summer comes, kids are faced with finding or making their own meals.

Volunteers made 100 meals Tuesday morning at the Presbyterian Church for the kick-off of the “Food 4 Kids Program”. From there they went to three locations around Jefferson City.

Julie Gramlich and her daughters Maddi and Jordan, delivered meals to the park in Elston.

Gramlich said, "The lady who coordinates it was a friend of mine and I feel its important that Ishow my kids things they can do to give back to those who are less fortunate".

The meals included peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cookies, and apple sauce and juice boxes. Although local churches organize the program, the United Way helps out with corporate sponsors.

United Way Vice President Theresa Verslues said, "So they go out to there businesses and their employees and recruit volunteers and they each take different weeks but they have found this is a really great experience for their employees."

The program runs Monday through Friday through August 17th.
