The 4th of July means something different to everybody.

But do Mid-Missourians still remember why we celebrate this holiday?

KRCG’s Facebook Crew went downtown in Jefferson City and talked with residents to find out what this special holiday means to them.

"It’s our country, our lives, and we are allowed to live it because of our independence we received on July 4th,” Jefferson City Resident Jayne Dunkmann said.

The 4th of July is a special day where the United States of America celebrates its birthday.

This year marks the 235th birthday for America.

But what does this holiday mean to Missourians?

"Since it's the 4th of July and I’m a veteran it makes me think of those people that are in harms way, and are not able to be here with us to enjoy this relaxing holiday,” Cole County Resident Steven Atkins said.

"We’re a nation unlike others. We have freedom of speech and all these things that we take for granite. So this day kind of gives us a chance to reflect on that,” Jefferson City Resident Debi Word said.

Most of the people I spoke with Monday said when they hear the words 4th of July they think of one thing, fireworks.

"When I hear the 4th of July I immediately think of fireworks and family. It’s just a good time to spend with close friends,” Dunkmann said.

This day means something special to everyone whether it's fireworks or spending time with family.

But the true message everyone should take away from the 4th of July is freedom.

Tell us what you think. What does the 4th of July mean to you?
