Tributaries that feed the Missouri River are facing a greater-than-normal risk of flooding thanks to water levels on the Missouri River.

In Jefferson City, Wears Creek could flood from back water if the Missouri River rises above 35 feet. The water would cover Missouri Blvd, the nearby ball fields and parts of the expressway.

Flood experts from South Dakota to Missouri have already reported backed-up water channel flooding where the waterways meet the Missouri River. Hamburg, Iowa officials are watching the Nishnabotna River closely as they battle the MIssouri River from the west.

Hydrologists say tributary backups generally do not stretch more than a few miles from the point where rivers meet. But with floodwaters expected to stay through at least August, forecasters say the lesser-known tributaries could pose a significant threat as well if Missouri River flows increase or an intense storm strikes.
