Cole County Sheriff's Deputies held a sobriety checkpoint Friday at Highway 54 West and Hammond Road.
According to the department, approximately 1,700 cars passed through with deputies checking 523. Authorities wanted to make sure visibility was high as the holiday weekend approached.
“Checkpoints are about using visibility as a deterrent to drunk driving and we clearly had visibility for the many travelers heading down Highway 54. Hopefully this will remind them not to drink and drive this weekend,” said Sheriff Greg White.
The Missouri Highway Patrol conducted a separate checkpoint on Route C near Highway 179.
According to statistics, Highway 54 is the most dangerous roadway in Cole County
Of the 523 cars deputies checked, 12 violations were noted. Authorities arrested one for felony DWI. One other DWI was recorded at the checkpoint. Other violations included two Driving While Suspended, one Driving While Revoked, two Driving Without a License, one Drug Possession, one Minor in Possession of Alcohol, one Careless and Imprudent Driving, one Failure to Follow a Traffic Control Device, and one Littering citation.
In 2011, the Cole County Sheriff's Department has arrested almost 100 drunk drivers.
