JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- At a news conference Wednesday afternoon organizers for this weekend's Salute to America Celebration in Jefferson City said they aren't worried about flooding.

Many people think the new pedestrian walkway would be a great place to see the fireworks Monday night, but that won't be an option.

Authorities will close the walkway at 7p.m. Monday.

Jefferson City Police said the area will be closed for the public's safety.

If there were to be some kind of emergency with a pedestrian or whoever else could be on that bridge we would have an exceptionally hard time getting to them,” Jefferson City Police Captain Doug Shoemaker said. “Those of you that have been on the bridge probably realize that it is very narrow, it's very lengthy and hard to get through with any kind of reasonableness with our time."

City officials stressed at the meeting Wednesday, Missouri River flooding is not expected to cause any problems for the weekends festivities.

They said everything will go as planned.

The walkway will re-open after the firework show ends Monday night.

Fourth of July activities for the capitol city will kick off Saturday with the providence bank carnival opening at 2 p.m.
