The Moniteau County Sheriff's Department responded to a residence in Latham, Missouri early Friday morning for a reported shooting.

Once the police arrived they found 28-year old Dean Smith in his living room with a gun shot wound to his stomach.

Smith told law enforcement that he had been shot while confronting a trespasser on his property.

The investigation showed no evidence to support the alleged confrontation with the trespasser.

So later the police found out that the gunshot was a result of a domestic disturbance. During the disturbance Smith apparently shot himself.

He is now in the hospital and listed in stable condition.

Law enforcement are still trying to find out exactly what happened.
