Sheriff's Department warns of phone scams

The Boone County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of phone scams.

The department said several residents have contacted them recently to report suspicious calls. The scam caller reporter the citizen had won a prize and was requesting personal information like bank account and social security numbers.

The Sheriff's Department want to reminds citizens to never disclose personal or financial information to an unsolicited telephone caller. Also, you should not give a card number to an unsolicited caller stating you must pay a "processing fee" in order to collect a large prize.

The Department said these scammers can also use phony charitable organizations to get people to donate money and provide personal information. Other telephone scams include offers of low interest loans, debt consolidation, travel scams and medical discounts.
