A Columbia man was arrested early Tuesday morning on suspicion of 2nd degree robbery and deviate sexual assault.

Columbia Police said a woman reported that around 3:35 a.m. she was walking from a friend's house toward Providence when two male suspects on bicycles rode next to her. One turned around and asked to use her cell phone. He reportedly forcibly took her purse and then knocked her to the ground and sodomized her.

The woman ran to a nearby house to get help. Police located the suspect, David Lee Maxwell, and another male on bicycles nearby. Police said Maxwell had a trashbag attached to his bicycle that had the woman's purse and a car stereo whose owner has not been identified.

Maxwell is in the Boone County Jail on suspicion of robbery in the second degree and forcible sodomy. The second suspect was not charged and was released from the Columbia Police Department.
