This weekend, Memorial Day weekend, is the unofficial start of summer.

Mid Missouri saw a long, harsh winter and the majority of us are ready for a break.

So, you might be wondering what there is to do this weekend.

Here’s a summary of activities you and your family could enjoy.

The Salute to Veterans Airshow is on Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Columbia Regional Airport.

The event is free and open to the public.

On Monday, Memorial Day, you can attend the Salute to Veterans Parade.

The parade will begin at 9:55 a.m. with the USA 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" and the Canadian Forces Skyhawks landing into 5 intersections on Broadway in Columbia.

After the there will be a Memorial Day Courthouse Ceremony at the Boone County Courthouse.

At 11:30 a.m. on Monday there will be a Memorial at the Jefferson City National Cemetery.

The Memorial Day program will remember and honor all military members who have served or are currently serving our nation.

LTC Regina Kilmer from the National Guard is the event’s keynote speaker.

You could also enjoy a Memorial Day Concert performed by the Jefferson City Community Symphonic Band Monday.

The concert is at 1 p.m. at the Simonsen Ninth Grade Center Auditorium.

Memorial Day was formerly known as Decoration Day and was first put into place to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the American Civil War.

It was then extended after WWI to honor Americans who have died in all wars.

Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials.

Across the country Americans take a national moment of remembrance at 3 p.m. local time.
