State senator Mike Kehoe has written a letter to Governor Jay Nixon with a formal request for a special legislative session.

Kehoe wants lawmakers to take another shot at the legislation for consumer funding of a second nuclear power plant site permit.

The Jefferson City Republican says something needs to be done this year, before the power consortium considering the project looks elsewhere.

"I think the coalition of utility providers that are asking for the site permit process – again, it's not just Ameren, it's the co-ops, it's KCP&L,” Kehoe said. “We need to keep that coalition together.  And that coalition needs to believe that Missouri is convinced that nuclear power is a great step for our base-load power of the future ...and that the legislature and the citizens are willing to support that."

A last-minute compromise on site permit funding died on the Senate floor as the legislative session ended Friday.
