Prosecutors charged James Johnston with endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest.

A Callaway County man is now in jail accused of trying to evade police.

Early Thursday morning, Fulton Police attempted to pull over 26-year-old James Johnston for a traffic violation. Johnston then attempted to lose the police by driving through the Callaway County Hospital parking lot and two fields.

After abandoning the vehicle on a county road, Johnston took a two-year-old child out of the car and tried to get away on foot. While trying to get away, the child was thrown over a barbed wire fence into a field.

Police caught up with Johnston a short time later and took him into custody. The child was checked by paramedics who determined that there were no injuries to worry about.

Johnston was arrested for two outstanding Callaway County warrants, along with driving with a revoked license, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, endangering the welfare of a child 1st degree, resisting arrest, and numerous traffic violations.

He is currently being held at the Callaway County Jail with a bond of over $13,000.
