Gov. Nixon vetoed this map and sent the bill to redraw congressional districts back to the General Assembly.
Governor Jay Nixon vetoed a bill that would redraw congressional districts in Missouri.
The bill was drawn after census figures showed too little growth in Missouri to continue holding nine congressional seats. Missouri will have only eight congressional districts after the election.
Much of the population loss was in the St. Louis area, and the new map reflected that population loss, splitting up several counties, including Jefferson County. Locally, the map placed Cole County in a district that included parts of St. Louis, while Boone County would move to the 4th congressional district, the district currently represented by Vickie Hartzler.
"I am hopeful that in the next two weeks the Legislature can produce a map that will reflect a better representation for all regions of the state, and deliver it to my desk," Gov. Nixon said.
The General Assembly worked tirelessly to finish the bill, fearing a lack of time to redraw the lines if the Governor vetoed the bill. If the state legislature fails to send a new bill to the Governor, or overturn his veto, the courts could get involved in the situation.
The governor sent a letter explaining his veto to legislature leadership.
