BOONVILLE, MO. -- Activists supporting low-income individuals and families hand-delivered more than 130 letters to Senator Claire McCaskill.
The letters from concerned Missourians asked the senator to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
Members of GRO, or Grass Roots Organizing, held a small demonstration in front of the Boonville School District Administration Building on Wednesday morning where McCaskill was holding a roundtable discussion on education.
McCaskill assured the demonstrators that she wants to stop America’s largest corporations from paying zero taxes thanks to foreign tax havens and other loopholes.
GRO Member Lily Tinker Fortel said, “She (McCaskill) was extremely receptive. She took the letters and assured us that she was interested in protecting the programs and making sure that we don’t privatize Medicare and Medicaid. We’re very glad to hear it. We’re going to keep watching her and make sure that she continues to stand up for the best needs of Missouri citizens.”
McCaskill told the demonstrators, people who are wealthy do not need the government to subsidize their prescription drugs.
Changing those federal requirements would help bring down the costs of Medicare and help control the national debt.
