Update: April 18 at 5:10 p.m.:
Missouri dog breeders would have longer to comply with new regulations under a freshly announced plan to rewrite a voter-approved law.
The agreement Monday among agricultural and animal advocacy groups comes only days after the Legislature gave final approval to a bill that would repeal and replace key parts of the dog-breeding law passed last November.
The latest plan still would repeal a voter-approved maximum of 50 breeding dogs per business and still would relax the criminal penalties passed by voters.
But it would give existing dog breeders until 2016 to comply with new housing regulations to be written by the state Department of Agriculture. The bill recently passed by lawmakers simply would have repealed many of the voter-approved housing requirements.
Original Story:
Ellen DeGeneres is talking about Missouri today on her show.
She’s discussing the Prop B repeal that the General Assembly sent to Governor Jay Nixon’s desk this session.
She will have the head of the Humane Society of the United States, Wayne Pacelle, on the show to talk about the issue.
They are urging Missourians to send letters to Gov. Nixon’s office to veto the legislation which would override parts of voter-approved Proposition B.
Critics say the legislation should be vetoed because the voters approved the original law, but proponents said the original law was overbearing in certain areas.
The show will air at 4 p.m. Monday on KRCG.
