Governor Jay Nixon is hoping a new economic report will launch Missouri's struggling economy into the 21st century. Its called the Strategic Initiative for Economic Growth. It's a 90 page plan that's targeting seven core industries, and six geographic areas throughout the state.
Basically, it's Missouri's five year plan to save the economy. But is there anything in the report that will actually create a job? KRCG asked the state economic director to explain.
State Economic Director David Kerr said, "This is a process to develop a road map for the future for the state of Missouri from an economic development standpoint."
The report was created with the help of 600 business, labor and higher education leaders from around Missouri. They told the state where they needed help the most.
Kerr explained, “Additionally we identified seven targeted clustered industries that already exist in the state but they are the industries that we believe are going to drive economic growth in the future."
Those target clusters include: Advanced manufacturing, energy solutions, biosciences, health sciences and services, information technology, financial and professional services, and transportation and logistics.
When we looked through the reports strategy section we saw a lot of buzz words like "review", "promote", "attract", "assess" and "work with". The report even says the strategies and tactics in the plan can't be implemented without "redistribution of both staff and money." That will take action from the state legislature.
Missouri House Speaker Steve Tilly told us, "I think anytime you have business groups from around the state business leaders from around the state they come together and say here is what you can do to help create jobs I think you have to listen."
When KRCG asked Kerr if this will create jobs, he stressed this report is a plan and lawmakers have the final say.
However Kerr said we are already seeing parts of the plan being implemented. Last week the state got $27 million from the federal government for small business creation.
