COLUMBIA, MO. -- Hundreds of Mizzou administrators, faculty and students gathered Thursday afternoon to show their unity.
Organizers kicked-off their “One Mizzou” campaign.
The campaign is in response to some racially offensive events that recently happened on the Mizzou campus.
Last year, 2 students were expelled for placing cotton balls at Mizzou’s Black Culture Center.
Another Mizzou student recently spray painted racial slurs on a campus statue.
Members of the Missouri Students Association say their new program goes far beyond diversity and encourages students to respect one another.
MSA Communications Director Victoria Craig said, “I’m really proud to be a student on this campus because we have a variety of different people here. It’s important that we all work together and learn about our differences. We need to come together and help each other out when we need it.”
MU Chancellor Dr. Brady Deaton said, “We can keep screaming about these things. Students were saying, yes we can object to it and be outraged, but why don’t we do something that’s much more proactive and positive and embracing of what we want to see as a learning community here in the State of Missouri?”
Students at the campaign launch signed a pledge to uphold a culture of respect and responsibility on their campus.
The “One Mizzou” campaign has several events scheduled throughout this month including a lecture by world famous poet and author Dr. Maya Angelou on Thursday, April 14, 7 p.m. at Jesse Hall Auditorium.
