With a major fault line running near the Mississippi River in Missouri, earthquake preparedness is important in the Midwest.
And a Jefferson City fourth-grade class is getting some recognition for an earthquake preparedness video that has been shown to students in eleven states.
The Thorpe Gordon fourth-grade class of Rhonda Allen demonstrated the “drop, cover and hold on” method in the video.
They learned the method before Christmas.
"I learned that it's really safe to get under a desk because stuff can fall on you," 4th grader Faith Boyles said.
Thorpe Gordon Principal Suzanne Wilson said the video was shown to more than 6,000 students.
"That's really exciting and a great way for the kids to give back," she said.
Now, videos are being made with the footage for other states.
"Now we're going to put one together for California and you're gonna be helping educate people there," Missouri Public Safety Communications Director Mike O'Connell told the students on Friday.
Governor Jay Nixon signed a proclamation in formal recognition of the effort.
"They're going to reach out to more people than any paid voice or talking head ever could," said SEMA director Paul Parmenter
The State Emergency Management Agency initially shot a video of Allen’s class doing the drill in December. When the earthquake consortium saw the video on the internet, they decided it would be a good example for other states to watch.
