JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- As fuel prices soar, so do the number of passengers on the Missouri River Runner.

In a press release from MoDOT said Amtrack actually added two additional coach class cars on the St. Louis to Kansas City passenger rail corridor for all trains this weekend

Passengers and railway volunteers said the increase in passengers is all about convenience.

"For convenience, with the price of gas right now, in the St. Louis area it's $3.50 a gallon and climbing so I was able to get a round trip ticket for $40 and you can't drive it for that," passenger Lisa Mohan said.

"As you know, here in Jefferson City you don't have a lot of choice, there's no scheduled buses, there's no scheduled airlines, so if you don't drive, you've got one way in and one way out," volunteer Robert Gammon said.

Since last June the Missouri River Runner has seen a jump in ridership of nearly 16 percent, nationwide Amtrak is up 6 percent.
