The biggest news in the world on Friday was a major earthquake in Japan, followed by a major tsunami on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.
The news has people wondering what they can do to help, even as far inland as Missouri. The Red Cross is taking the same donation they took during Haiti’s recent earthquake – a $10 donation via your cell phone. Text 90999 to donate the $10. The Capital Area Chapter volunteers and emergency response vehicle have been placed on alert in response to the tsunami that hit the West Coast.
If the chapter is called into service, at least two trained volunteers will be sent with the vehicle for at least two weeks. Other volunteers could also be deployed for as many as three weeks.
The Audrain-Montgomery County area also is on alert.
People in Mid-Missouri have been trying to reach friends and family in Japan, and are reporting that the method of choice has been Facebook. Cell phone reception during times of emergency is often spotty, but here’s what those who have contacted people overseas have said on the KRCG Facebook page:
“Dawn Ault Jackson: I have a friend teaching in Japan and who was in the earthquake but is fine and have another friend who is stationed south on a island off Japan. He too is safe.
Chrissy Wilson Hilt: Got friends in Hawaii and Japan. Contacting via Facebook
Angie Branson: I have friends in both Japan and Hawaii and family in CA! Facebook has been contact central! Prayers to all who are affected!
Jim Miller: Yes I know lots of fellow Air Force members @ Yokota Air Base outside Tokyo & Misawa Air Base in northern Japan. Everyone is good @ Yokota and still unknown @ Misawa which is in worst hit area. Facebook is the communication tool of choice.
Jenni Shramek: Have a friend in Hawaii whose flight was cancelled. Staying in touch via fb.”
