COLUMBIA, MO. -- It was the first full day of screenings during the 8th Annual True/False Film Festival in Columbia.

Thousands of people from around the world are buying tickets for the 4-day documentary movie event.

More than 25,000 tickets were sold at last year's festival.

Organizers expect to sell more than 27,000 tickets this year.

Members of the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau can’t say exactly how much money the event brings into their city.

They do know the festival has a huge economic impact on Columbia and the surrounding areas.

CVB Interim Director Amy Schneider said, “Each person that goes to the movies is going to be downtown.  They are going be eating somewhere.  They are going shopping somewhere.  You take that number times a minimum amount of $75 per person and you’ve got a lot of money there.  If they are spending the night in hotels, then you tack on another $90 or $100 per night at a hotel.”

True/False Film Festival tickets are still available.

Organizers are showing the movies in several locations throughout Columbia between now and Sunday.
