Columbia firefighters responded to a fire in a room at the Holiday Inn near the mall Wednesday evening. However, instead of extinguishing the flames firefighters helped mop up the mess.
That’s because sprinklers in the room did all the work.
Once on the scene, firefighters worked to stop the flow from the sprinkler system. They also helped hotel staff mop up some water in the hallway and two rooms below where the fire happened.
Hotel officials said the fire started in a room that was unoccupied. Smoke could be seen in the hallway, so hotel officials evacuated guests as a precaution.
Fire investigators are on the scene to determine the exact cause of the fire, but the Columbia Fire Department said a wall-mounted air conditioner/furnace appears to be to blame.
