JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (AP) -- Some Missouri lawmakers say the state should collect sales tax on Internet purchases to help the state close its budget gap.

House members Margo McNeil and Rory Ellinger, both St. Louis area Democrats, say the state is losing millions in revenue by not collecting the sales tax. They also say not having an Internet sales tax gives online stores an unfair advantage over Missouri businesses.

Both are sponsoring bills to have Missouri join an agreement with 24 other states to make changes to its sales tax laws.

A study says the state could see more than $200 million per year in tax revenue from such a change, but Republicans have said the House likely will not vote on the bills.
