COLUMBIA, MO. -- Does cold weather have an impact on crime?
We posed that question to the Columbia Police Department.
Officers said they don’t see a lot of change in the amount of crime when it gets colder.
Investigators said heavy snowfalls help prevent suspects from committing some property crimes and burglaries.
Frigid temperatures can also be the cause of other types of illegal activity.
Columbia Police Officer Jill Wieneke said, “Sometimes those same conditions can cause other types of crimes to go up such as domestic violence. We sometimes see more problems within the home when everyone is cooped up inside. We really don’t see a significant drop. Things stay pretty stable.”
Wieneke said it’s the same situation in Columbia during extreme heat.
There’s an increase in domestic violence during very hot and very cold temperatures.
