COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- The Boone County treasurer has died at a Columbia hospital.

Boone County Commissioner Ed Robb said Jan Fugit died Tuesday at a hospital where she had been undergoing treatment for an undisclosed medical condition. Fugit was 43.

The Columbia Daily Tribune reported that county commissioners met in closed session Monday and authorized another person to handle some of the office's duties until Fugit could return. Robb said they had expected Fugit to be gone from work a couple of weeks.

Gov. Jay Nixon appointed Fugit to the treasurer position in March 2010 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Kay Murray. The Boone County Democratic Central Committee will now nominate another appointee to serve until the next election.
