COLUMBIA, MO. -- Two former Missouri politicians received civic awards from The Missouri Bar on Monday morning.

Former Senator Kit Bond and former Congressman Ike Skelton were honored for their service to our country at Columbia’s Holiday Inn Expo Center.

Bond received his award in person during The Missouri Bar’s annual statewide competition called “We the People”.

Three Columbia junior high school teams competed in the competition.

The students held mock congressional hearings while they showed their knowledge of the United States Constitution.

Columbia College officials announced on Monday morning that they have started a new scholarship program for students involved with the event.

Columbia College Executive Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Terry Smith said, “We hope to have a fund that’s sufficiently large that we can give scholarships to as many students as can come to the college who are graduates of the program.”

Lawyers, state leaders and government officials judged the students in the “We the People” competition.

Morgan County students disqualified themselves from the event because of bad weather.
